Small/Independent Press Pitch Conferences
The Small/Independent Press Pitch Conference by New York Writers Workshop offers writers of unconventional, ambitious, or genre-defying works—such as first novels, memoirs, graphic novels, and story collections—a platform to present their projects to editors from established independent and small press publishing houses. Held twice annually, this conference provides an alternative to mainstream publishing avenues.
-
Refine your pitch with guidance from a New York Writers Workshop Conference Leader.
Present your pitch to three different editors from reputable independent/small press New York publishing houses, such as Akashic Books, Skyhorse, Soho Press, and Bellevue Literary Press.
Engage and learn from fellow writers in a collaborative environment.
-
Day 1 – Pitch Workshop Participants are grouped (typically 10 per group) and work closely with an NYWW instructor to refine their pitches. Through collaborative feedback, writers enhance clarity, conciseness, and impact.
Day 2 – Pitch Sessions
Morning: Public Pitch – Each participant presents their pitch to an editor in a group setting, allowing everyone to observe and learn from the feedback provided.
Afternoon: Private Pitches – Participants have one-on-one sessions with two different editors to present their pitches in a more personalized setting.
Closing: Group gathering to recap the experience and discuss next steps
-
Before the conference:
Draft a two-minute oral pitch, including your working title, a succinct summary of your plot, setting, and characters, and any unique aspects of your book.
Identify comparable books to anticipate potential questions from editors.
Practice delivering your pitch aloud; memorization isn't necessary, and notes are welcome during presentations.
No need to submit your pitch in advance or bring copies of your manuscript or proposal.
-
The conference is held at Ripley-Grier Studios, located on the 16th floor at 520 Eighth Avenue, between West 36th and 37th Streets. Participants often bring laptops to revise pitches during the event. The venue offers free Wi-Fi, nearby printing services, and on-site snack bars for convenience.
